Overland, 4x4, and AWD

Survive the Apocalypse in style, or just go where you want.

Who Needs a Bunker?!

Much like their flat-road friendly cousins, one could argue that the trend of overland and off-road vans has it’s roots in the gypsy caravans of Europe. The idea is essentially the same: go where you want, when you want, and bring your stuff.

With the emergence of the overland and offroad trends, “go where you want” has SO many more options. If there’s an apocalypse, you might as well make an adventure out of it … besides bunkers WILL run out of supplies.

Offroad Conversions

If ever there was a rabbit-hole of dreams and budget, customizing your portable oasis is it. Where do you want to go, how far off-road does your wanderlust reach? What will your budget allow? Some of the financially blessed can ask “how much luxury can I cram in?” (The answer is A LOT.)

Off the Shelf/Lot Options

With the current prevalence of SUVs, the number of straight-from-the-manufacturer off-road-capable options are limited but more are coming. AWD is your most likely bet, and true off-road machines are coming.

AWD Vans

Some of the most popular vans have AWD options including the a cupule of minivans still hanging in there. Current models (U.S.) include:

  • 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

  • 2023 Ford Transit (150, 250, 350) - Passenger, Crew, and Cargo

  • 2023 Toyota Sienna

  • 2023 Chrysler Pacifica & Pacifica Hybrid

If you’re up for a used model, you will have more options, but they usually come at a premium because van life is cool.

4x4 Vans

  • 2023 Mercedes Sprinter (4x4)

  • and … <crickets)> Sorry.

There were more available back in the day:

  • Chevrolet Express / GMC Safari

  • Chevrolet Astro

  • Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro (1984-1992)

  • Mitsubishi Delica (1990s*)

  • Toyota HiAce (1990s*)

(*Automobiles not sold in the US have to wait 25 years until they can be imported, which is lame.)
